Exports in negative zone, decline 9th straight month

Imports, too, declined 29.3 percent in June, and were valued at USD 18.98 billion against USD 26.86 billion in the corresponding month of last year, showed the data release by the commerce and industry ministry.

Cumulatively, exports for the first quarter of this fiscal were down 31.3 percent at USD35.43 billion, against USD51.55 billion in the corresponding quarter of last fiscal. Imports were down 36.5 percent at USD50.94 billion, against USD80.19 billion.

Thus, the trade deficit for April-June 2009 was estimated at USD15.50 billion against USD28.64 billion during the like period of last fiscal.

Thanks to lower prices of crude oil in global markets, the country's import bill on that count was as much as 50.6 percent lower in June. Such imports were valued at USD5 billion, against USD10.12 billion.

Cumulatively, such imports were down 56.8 percent during the first three months of this fiscal and were valued at USD12.77 billion, against USD29.54 billion in the like period of the previous fiscal.

Oil imports during June, 2009 were valued at USD 4999 million which was 50.6 percent lower than oil imports valued at USD 10119 million in the corresponding period last year.   Oil imports during April- June, 2009 were valued at USD 12767  million which was 56.8 percent lower than the oil imports of USD 29542 million in the corresponding period last year.

Non-oil imports during June, 2009 were estimated at USD 13978 million which was 16.5 percent lower than non-oil imports of USD 16736 million in June, 2008. Non-oil imports during April- June, 2009 were valued at USD 38169 million which was 24.6 percent lower than the level of such imports valued at USD 50645 million in April- June, 2008.

The trade deficit for April- June, 2009 was estimated at USD 15504 million which was lower than the deficit of USD 28642 million during April-June, 2008.
